If an individual has signs/symptoms of an opioid overdose, an individual representing Jefferson County Schools 509J may administer Narcan.
All Jefferson County schools have multiple doses of Narcan readily available at each site. Narcan can be found in the AED cabinets throughout the buildings. The parent/guardian will be notified immediately if Narcan is administered to their student during school or during a school district related activity.
What is Narcan?
Narcan is a life-saving opioid antagonist medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Narcan binds to the opioid receptors in the body’s cells and can reverse and block the effects of opioids.
Is Narcan safe?
If an individual has not overdosed on an opioid, Narcan has no effect on the body. The risk of death from an opioid overdose is much greater than the risk of side effects from Narcan.
