Announcing Madras High School’s March Athletes of the Month!

We are thrilled to kick off 23-24 Spring Sports season with Athlete of the Month! These exceptional athletes from baseball, softball, track and field, golf, and tennis have shown outstanding dedication and sportsmanship on and off the field, course, and court.

Each head coach took the time to write down summaries on why these individuals truly stand out. Let’s give a roaring cheer for these March stars!

Baseball: Nakomis was moved to a new position this season and has really taken charge of it. He has been a quiet leader on the team. He constantly tries to learn more about the position and as he has been recovering from a thumb injury during basketball season, he has really adjusted well. During the month of March he had a .414 batting avg and led the team with 12 RBI’s.

Softball: Hailee has been a dedicated and positive teammate and exemplary student-athlete. Hailee works hard to lead her team in all that she does, from keeping up her grades to having a positive attitude to her performance as a leadoff hitter, shortstop and pitcher.

Boys Track & Field: Andres is a Junior this year and this is his third year in Track and Field. Andres is a sprinter and jumper for MHS Track. Currently, Andres has the fastest 100M and 200M times for MHS Track. Andres also has the number one Long Jump for MHS Track and currently leads the Tri-Valley conference in this event. Andres is one of our leaders of the the team and takes this role very seriously. Andres is a student of his events and dedicates a huge amount of time and effort to the success he has seen in his High School Track and Field career. He is a very humble athlete and will always take the time to help his fellow teammates, especially our younger athletes. Andres is a very coachable athlete and a very positive young man that makes our team that much better.

Girls Track & Field: Arema is a thrower for the MHS Track and Field Team. Arema throws the Shot, Discus and Javelin and is currently our number one female shot putter, number two Javelin thrower, and number three discus thrower. Arema is one of our most consistent athletes. She is dedicated to the Track and Field team. She is very focused on improving her skill to improve her throwing and will go above and beyond in practice to improve her craft. Arema is a teammate that will go out of there way to support and encourage her fellow Track Athletes.

Boys Golf: Tate played Varsity events for us last year as a freshman, and has already become one of the elite golfers in our program in just his sophomore year. In our first event of the season at Eagle Crest, Tate shot a 92, which was 17 shots better than the score he fired at the exact same event last season. He has put in a ton of hard work over the last year to improve his game, but has also made marked improvements in the area of strategy and course management. He has carried a 3.5+ GPA all season, and is a great example of a true student-athlete who excels both on and off the golf course.

Girls Golf: Ninette Garcia is the girls golf athlete of the month. She attended our golf fundraiser and went above and beyond selling the Buffalo head to golfers. She was having so much fun that she plans on coming back to the tournament next year, just to help sell the Buffalo Head.

Boys Tennis: It is with great pleasure and an honor to nominate Heber Pineda for March Athlete of the Month. Heber is a senior, and it’s his first year out for tennis even though we’ve been trying to recruit him since middle school. With all joking aside, we have seen exemplary character from him at a very early age that has grown and developed into the mature young man he has become today. He has been nothing but respectful to the coaches, teammates, and opponents. He loses with grace, and has learned to now self-reflect on his mistakes after knowing how to visit with his coaches in order to correct those mistakes in practices for his next match. Because this is his first year out for tennis, the learning curve has been steep. However, Heber is intelligent, athletic, and has “court” sense due to playing soccer which has helped him improve a tremendous amount since the beginning of the season. Another reason for such improvement is he comes to practice without complaints, committed to improve his personal game and the game itself, and has dedicated himself to the sport of tennis. It is now in his blood. When he knows he’s not going to be at practice or matches, he communicates that to his coaches way in advance. He is willing to help without hesitation and without being asked. Examples of such acts are seeing tasks that need to be done, being a positive example of an upperclassman, and shares what he knows with the younger and less experienced freshman teammates. Heber has become the 13th Man, so to speak, since the varsity is considered a 12-player team. We have come to rely on him as a steady player who will represent the MHS boys’ tennis team well in a last minute clutch to fill a varsity spot whether it be in Singles or Doubles. He has, therefore, learned to be flexible, and knows his place on the team without demanding anything in return.

Girls Tennis: Alycia Nancy Quinto is the Athlete of the Month for Girls Tennis. She comes to practice every day with a smile on her face, a great attitude and a desire to learn and improve. She is extremely flexible and is willing to step in and play other positions with whomever when needed. Most importantly, she is coachable – a coaching delight!
