We are thrilled to introduce Heath Alexander as the next head girl’s basketball coach at Madras High School. With around 30 years of coaching experience, Alexander brings a wealth of experience to this position. His first coaching job was at Marist High School where he coached the JV Boy’s Basketball team. After coaching there for a few years, his career took him to coaching stops at Oregon State, Colorado State, Weber State, Northwest Christian University, and University of Cincinnati.

“I love the game. I love to share the game,” Alexander said. “I love to just be excited in the gym and just see my athletes grow and play free, play to have fun and compete.”

Most recently, he served as the assistant boy’s basketball coach for MHS. He and his wife moved to Madras, her hometown, so they could be closer to family.

“Being here in Madras has been a blessing. We love it,” he said. “We’re here to stay and there was a position open with the boy’s team so I jumped on and started coaching with him and I really enjoyed the boy’s program. I enjoyed working with him but when the opportunity came to be a head coach again, I was just really excited about having my program and seeing how we can grow it and see what we can do.”

As he prepares himself for another head coaching opportunity, Alexander is looking forward to next season. He’s excited to develop his relationship with the players.

“I think we can have a culture here and atmosphere in the gym where everybody’s excited to be there,” he said. “They’re ready to work. We’re flying around, and we’ll play a style that people are going to enjoy to come watch. I feel like we can build a powerhouse in a hurry by just spending some time with our youth, spending some time with our development, and getting after because I think it can be really special here.”

Alexander is taking over a program that has seen a lot of success in recent years. The team is coming off its third straight state tournament appearance. In 2022, the team finished the season with a 3rd-place trophy. They’ve qualified for the state playoffs in each of the past six seasons.

“I want to go banner hunting with the kids like I want to hang things in the rafters and have fun,” he said. I want to be great on the floor but also want to graduate quality young women and be supportive for them to go on to college, finding careers, that kind of stuff.”

In his free time, Alexander loves to spend time with his wife and kids. He has two older boys and two younger daughters.
